Embarking on a Boreal Explorers Raider Expedition

Participants must ensure they are covered by relevant insurance, including but not limited to personal injury, liability, and equipment coverage suitable for the risks associated with their expedition.

By joining an expedition, participants acknowledge and accept full responsibility for planning, execution, and risk management throughout their journey.

Boreal Explorers Admin does not provide insurance, guarantees, or supervision. It is the participant’s obligation to be adequately prepared, equipped, and informed about the challenges they may face.

By participating in the Boreal Explorers Raider program, participants fully accept all terms and conditions outlined in this disclaimer, including personal responsibility for safety, planning, and risk management.

Completion

The Boreal Explorers Raider title is not awarded solely for distance covered, but for demonstrating sound expedition planning, self-sufficiency, wilderness travel, and the ability to complete a challenging journey using one’s own resources.

The criteria below are designed to preserve that spirit.

Completion Report: Upon completion, participants must submit a 1,200–2,000-word expedition report for publication on www.borealexplorers.com. The report must include a minimum of two photographs for each day of the expedition, together with a GPX file of the route as proof of completion.

By fulfilling these requirements, participants will earn the coveted Boreal Explorers Raider title and patch and have their names listed on the Raiders website.

Criteria

Membership: At least one participant in the expedition must be a Boreal Explorers member.

Distance: The expedition must cover a minimum of 100 km. It may be completed using one or more means of travel. Combining different means of travel (e.g. hiking and packrafting, skiing and climbing) is encouraged but not required.

Outdoor Nights: Participants must spend at least six nights outdoors under the stars using a tent, tarp, bivouac, hammock, or bivy bag. Huts, houses, cabins, or similar structures are not permitted.

Route Composition: No more than 5% of the route may consist of roads (asphalt or gravel), and only where necessary to move between expedition areas. Marked wilderness trails may be used, provided they comprise less than 25% of the total expedition distance. Examples include Kungsleden, Padjelantaleden, Nordkalottruta, and other remote backcountry routes. Participants must remain fully self-sufficient throughout the expedition, and the use of such trails must not diminish the expedition’s self-supported wilderness character.

Wilderness Requirement: The expedition must take place in a wilderness or backcountry area, avoiding local forests.

Support: The expedition must be unsupported. Pre-stored caches are permitted only if they are carried into the field by the participants during the expedition itself and later revisited along the route. Caches may not be placed in advance by vehicle or any other external support prior to the expedition. This allows temporary weight reduction during loops, climbs, or traverses while preserving the unsupported nature of the expedition.

Expedition Plan: A detailed plan must be submitted to Boreal Explorers Admin prior to departure.

Non-Retroactivity: Expeditions completed prior to the introduction of this program are not eligible for the Boreal Explorers Raider title or patch. Only new expeditions fulfilling all the criteria will be considered.
